About

Surfaces of wind turbines are subject to erosion, due to rain and hail impacts.
It causes high maintenance costs and worsened aerodynamic properties but also can lead to the microplastics falling to the water.

Is it a risk for marine animals, marine ecosystems, and environment?

This question will be answered in this project.

Leading edge erosion on a wind turbine blade
  • Most often observed blade damage mechanism
  •  Most expensive (over time) damage mechanism
  • 2-7 % reduction of AEP/Annual energy production
  • Can trigger laminate damage
  • Can be observed even 1-2 years after installation
